a couple Loxahatchee River corridor/JDSP Q's

Postby Joshism » Wed Mar 24, 2010 11:50 pm

Is all the park land along both sides of the Loxahatchee River north of Indiantown Road in Jupiter part of Jonathon Dickinson SP? I'm thinking of both the main FT trail on the west side of the river and the Italian Farms Trail on the east side of the river. I've noticed a lack of caches in this area, despite tons in the main part of JDSP and quite a few in Riverbend. And a now a bunch popping up in the Cypress Creek & Loxahatchee River Natural Areas to the west. If it's JDSP and not off limits to caches, is there any particular person at JDSP I should contact about placing a cache?

For the caches on the south/east side of the Loxahatchee (other than the ones really close to the river), are they all accessed only via kayak/canoe to either Trapper Nelsons or the 'tropical garden' oxbow about halfway between the park docks & Trappers then hike to them? The latter spot makes a bit nervous because I've seen gator activity in that area every time I've paddled by there.

Thanks!

Map of JDSP

The southern section, much of what's below the Trapper John cabin is a fairly recent acquisition. There were a couple of 'yak caches in that section, on some structure that created a bit of white water. When the park took over the property sometime in the last couple of years, they asked that those caches be removed. They like to do an assessment of new land before allowing rec use. As you can see JDSP is quite geocache friendly.

I don't know if they're now willing to have caches placed in that newer southern area, might be. If you're wanting to place caches, give them a call, or stop by the ranger station on your way in or out. Their biologist signs off on all caches.

I'm not sure I'm following your question about the SE caches. There is no public access from the EAST to that southern eastern section (there is road access, but its use is limited to park employees). You need to get down to the SE side by boat and hike in from whatever landing you want to use. Yes, gators for sure.
