Caching and Camping

Postby roundnround we go » Tue Jan 29, 2008 10:58 pm

I know alot of cachers like to camp also, so........I've been thinking about making some meet and greet type camping weekend events at some of the state parks. These events will probably consist of a little caching during the day then hanging around the campfire swapping caching stories and getting to know our fellow cachers. Most of the state parks don't have the biggest camp grounds so they would have to be planned up to 6 months or more ahead of time, so people can book up the campground, otherwise you won't have any place to camp. Is there anyone out there that would book their site that far in advance, or should I not waste my time? Please let us know. If I get at least 6 others that want to go, I am booking my site and writing up the event.

Heres the list so far:
April 18-19 @ the Caverns Sp
May 16-17 @ Topsail SP
June 13-14 @ Falling Waters SP
Jul 18-19 @ Blackwater SP
Aug 15-16 @ Henderson SP
Aug 29- Sep 1st (3 days) Labor Day @ St Andrews SP
Sep 26-27 @ Big Lagoon SP

and then , yes I know this one is out of NW Florida territory October 31st - Nov 1st (Halloween) @ Yogi Bears Jellystone Park in Madison (they throw a huge Halloween bash with decorate your campsite
contests and everything.)
So Let us know which park and date sounds best and we'll see what we can get going..........

Well I am ready to go! :woohoo: See the picture to the right of this post to see my camping rig.

The only question is can I wait 2-1/2 months to go camping?

We are looking at changing the April 18-19 event to Pine Log State Forrest. We are going to work on getting a little more info about the campgrounds to figure out what would be the best way to go. Looks like we have two choices. Either the group campground which is just set up for just tent camping but has a couple of pavilions six small fire rings and two large group fire rings, or the main campground where we will be a little more spread out but all spots have 50 amp elect., water, picnic tables and fire rings. Maybe we can change this to a multi event. We can all get together to hang out and have a good time on Saturday and hold a CITO on Sunday to do our part for the national CITO weekend before we leave.

I can not begin to express how happy I was to stumble across this post. I am a rv owner but not a full timer, looking for state park activities. Just this weekend, I decided that I needed to read up everything I could find on the net about geocaching as it seems to be the perfect fit for me, my rv and my dog.

My rv is currently in the shop (home sweet home) but as soon as I know when I can pick it up, I'll look over these dates more closely and probably reserve at parks that still have vacancies to fit my rig.

I haven't found my first cache yet but next weekend, I hope to say that is no longer true.

I'll try to not make too many newbie mistakes, but heck.. I -am- new after all. :D

Omi gawd.. newbie mistake big time... just caught the YEAR of the post I am replying to. However, the intent is the same... get rv out of shop, make new friends, have some fun.

Sorry Alice.....I may have led you astray with my previous response.

After further consideration, I would recommend that you avoid any of the colored pills and consider consulting with Ruy Lopez before you begin your journey OR perhaps just going with the Queen’s Gambit Declined. Unfortunately the latter will eventually lead to the frustrating Red Queen’s Hypothesis….ie, “it takes all the running you can do to remain in the same place.".....not to be confused with the age old question, “How can you be in two places at once, if you’re not anywhere at all”?

If any of the above makes sense to you, do NOT expect to be popular at geocaching events.

I hope to be able to go out this weekend for my first cache. I live by St. Andrews State Park. My RV apparently lives at the repair shop. Geocaching has to be more fun than chasing white rabbits.

Once the rv is out of the shop, I plan to take full advantage of my discount at Florida State Parks. If you are a senior or disabled, you get 50 % off on camping. Ironic that it is more eco friendly for me to be in the rv than in my home. While out in the rv, I shut everything off at the house.

I use to not take the rv out a lot in the summer as I prefer the milder temperatures when driving a huge fish bowl on wheels....38 feet of fish bowl to be exact. But discovering geocaching has drastically changed my thinking on that. I haven't even left the house yet and I have already purchased a FGA t-shirt. Yep.. I'm hooked.

Alice, it is good to see your interest in geocaching and camping. Those are two of my favorite activities as well. It would be good if you could attend one of the events coming up soon. The one in Perry this weekend is GC23E8J and several of us from Panama City are driving over for the day. Next weekend, 3/13, there is a local CITO event, GC23NE7, and you would be able to meet a lot of us local cachers. We would love to have you join us.

Hope you can get your RV repaired soon as I know that is a bummer to not be able to get out in the springtime. I have reservations in a couple of weeks for Ft Pickens and plan to do some caching in the Pensacola area. Would love to have you come along for that too.

What is the caching logon? Mine is PWCinPC and you can contact me through GC.com if you wish. Hope to see you at an event soon.

Phil

Thanks for the information Phil. I'll have to look at the dates, places a tad closer and then decide if its possible to get the rv out of the shop for any upcoming events. I've already told the shop that they can just fix what they can.. and I'll live with the rest until the ordered parts come in.

On geocaching.com, my nickname is mommyfang

Strange name but its what I named the first computer I built after it "bit" me and I learned the hard way how sharp cheap cases can be. This was way back when. Since then, every computer on the network got a "fang" name.

I can't wait to go out this week end. If you are out and about in the Panama City Beach area and see a lady pedaling a dorky looking adult trike with two huge safety flags, that's me.
